Earthquake Resistant Building Design in Bangladesh

Twelve checks any owner can ask about, from the soil test to the last column tie, before and during construction.

Key points

  • BNBC 2020 splits Bangladesh into four seismic zones. Dhaka is zone 2, Chattogram zone 3 and Sylhet zone 4, the highest.
  • Safety comes mostly from design and workmanship, not from extra cement: a regular shape, a proper soil test, ductile detailing and tested materials.
  • Open parking floors with walls only above them (soft storeys) are the most common weak point in Dhaka buildings.
  • Existing buildings can be checked and strengthened by a structural engineer.

Why earthquake design matters here

Bangladesh sits close to active plate boundaries to the north and east. The 1897 Assam earthquake badly damaged Sylhet, and engineers have warned for years that a strong quake near Dhaka would hit a city full of buildings put up without proper design.

The Bangladesh National Building Code (BNBC 2020) sets how buildings must resist earthquakes. The rules only help if they are followed on site, which is why owners need to know what to ask.

Checks 1 to 3: soil and foundation

01
Get a proper soil test
Boreholes to a depth set by the engineer, with a written report. Many Dhaka plots sit on filled soil over soft clay.
02
Pick the foundation from the test, not by habit
Piles, a mat or isolated footings depend on the soil and the load. Ask the engineer why the chosen type fits your report.
03
Plan for the final height
Design the foundation for every floor you may ever build.
Excavator Site
Site preparation before piling.
Site Excavation Aerial
Excavation for foundations.

Checks 4 to 6: shape and layout

01
Keep the plan simple and regular
Rectangles behave better than L, T or U shapes. If the shape must be irregular, the engineer may split it with a joint.
02
Avoid a soft storey
An open parking floor with brick walls above is much weaker than the floors over it. Add shear walls or bracing at ground level.
03
Limit heavy cantilevers and water tanks
Large overhangs and heavy roof tanks add force where the building can least carry it.
Apartment Dark Block
Left: open parking floor, the classic weak storey. Right: walls or bracing keep stiffness even from the ground up.

Checks 7 to 9: columns, beams and ties

01
Strong columns, weaker beams
Columns should be stronger than the beams they carry, so beams yield first and the building stays up.
02
Close ties near joints
Column and beam ties (stirrups) should be closer together near joints, with 135 degree hooks bent into the core.
03
Laps in the right place
Bar laps belong in the middle part of a column, not at the joint.
Construction Rebar
Ductile detailing: tighter tie spacing near beams, wider in the middle, hooks bent to 135 degrees.

Checks 10 to 12: materials and workmanship

01
Tested concrete
Ask for cylinder tests from each major pour and keep the results. Mix by weight or use ready mix where you can.
02
Known rebar
Use grade 500 deformed bars from established mills with mill test certificates.
03
Cover and curing
Cover blocks keep bars inside the concrete. Slabs and columns need to stay wet for at least 7 to 14 days.
Construction Rebar
Reinforcement check. The engineer should inspect bars, ties and cover before every pour.
Pay for supervision

The code is only as good as the person checking the site. A few paid visits from the design engineer at key pours cost far less than repairing a weak frame.

Already built? How to check an existing building

  • Look for diagonal cracks in walls or columns, and cracks that grow after each monsoon.
  • Be careful if floors were added later without a new structural design.
  • Ask a registered structural engineer for a visual check, then tests such as core samples or rebar scanning if needed.
  • Strengthening options include column jacketing, new shear walls and removing heavy roof loads.

Earthquake safe design: common questions

Is Dhaka in a high earthquake zone?

Dhaka is in zone 2 of BNBC 2020 with a coefficient of 0.20. The risk is raised by dense, often unapproved construction and soft soils in filled areas.

Sylhet and the northeast are in zone 4, the highest in BNBC 2020, with a coefficient of 0.36.

Good detailing, tie spacing and testing add a small share to the frame cost. The larger savings come from avoiding repairs and keeping the building insurable and sellable.

A floor much weaker or more flexible than the floors above, usually an open parking level with walls only on the upper floors. It is a common cause of collapse.

Yes. After an engineer's assessment, columns can be jacketed, shear walls added and heavy loads removed.
