Key points

  • Light body colours keep rooms cooler because they reflect more sun.
  • Mid tones such as sand, stone and soft grey hide monsoon streaks and road dust better than pure white.
  • Use a simple ratio: about 60% main colour, 30% second colour, 10% accent.
  • A good paint job is mostly preparation: crack repair, fungus wash, primer, then two top coats in the dry season.

How to choose a building colour design outside

Exterior colour in Bangladesh has three jobs: keep heat out, survive the monsoon and still look good in five years. Dark walls absorb more sun and push heat into the rooms behind them, which matters most on west walls and top floors. Pure white looks sharp on day one but shows every rain streak and fungus patch.

The palettes below balance those needs. Each one lists its colours from main to accent, so you can take the codes to any paint shop and ask for the closest match in an exterior range.

Painters Facade
Light walls reflect most of the sun. Dark walls absorb it and warm the room behind.

Colours on screen and on a colour card never match a sunlit wall exactly. Treat the codes as a starting point and test them on your own building.

Colour ideas by building type

House White Cubic
Modern duplex. Warm white body, dark frames, one timber or stone feature wall.
Apartment Dark Block
Apartment building. Light body with a darker band to break up height.
Single Storey House Veranda
Village home. Pale yellow or cream with a darker plinth that hides mud splash.
Building Facade Modern
Commercial building. Neutral body so shop signs and glass stand out.

Paint the plinth, the bottom 2 to 3 feet of the wall, a darker shade. Rain splashes mud here every monsoon, and a darker band hides it for years.

A paint system that lasts

01
Fix cracks and damp first
Paint over damp walls blisters within months. Seal cracks and stop leaks before painting.
02
Wash and treat fungus
Scrub off algae and apply an anti fungal wash, then let the wall dry.
03
Prime
Use an alkali resistant exterior primer or sealer on new or bare plaster.
04
Two top coats
Apply two coats of a weather resistant exterior emulsion from a known brand.
05
Paint in the dry season
November to March gives the paint time to cure without rain. Expect to repaint every 5 to 7 years.
Paint Roller
Preparation takes longer than painting. Good painters spend most of their time on cleaning, filling and priming.

Add colour without paint

Brick cladding, stone, wood look tiles and metal panels bring colour that does not fade like paint. Use them on one feature wall or the ground floor, and keep the rest painted. On commercial buildings, glass and ACP panels do the same job.

House Timber White
Timber look cladding on white render.
House Pool Cladding
Stone on the ground floor, paint above.
Test in daylight

Paint two large patches on the sunny and shady side of the house and look at them in the morning and evening before you buy all the paint. Our

partners can also show your house in each palette first.

Plan the whole elevation, not only the colour

Colour works best with a good front elevation design: balanced windows, sunshades and balcony railings. If you are still designing the house, read our duplex design ideas. For a finished colour scheme with 3D views, see building colour design.

Exterior colours: common questions

Which exterior colour is best for hot weather in Bangladesh?

Light colours such as warm white, cream, sand and pale grey reflect more sunlight and keep walls cooler. Use darker colours only for trims or small features.

Mid tones such as sand, beige, stone and soft grey hide monsoon streaks and dust better than pure white or very dark colours. A darker plinth hides mud splash.

With good preparation and a quality exterior emulsion, every 5 to 7 years. Coastal and roadside houses may need it sooner.

The dry season, roughly November to March, so the paint can cure without rain.

Two or three. A main colour for about 60% of the walls, a second colour for about 30%, and an accent for the last 10%.
